My Home’s the Street and it's a Stage

Helsinki, Under the Same Sky – Art in the City an urban art project, Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma, Helsinki 2000 City of Culture Foundation, Helsinki, 1999.

1. Video: "Taivas” (The Sky), duration 05:30:00 min, “Asfaltti” (Asphalt), duration 08:13:00 min and “Katu” (The Street), duration 09:07:00 min, directed and edited by Minna Heikinaho, filming by Mikael Vallgren, format: miniDV, PAL. Implementation: rear projection on screen, three videos in three shopfront windows. The video tells about Kallio, a part of Helsinki, and the life of local residents.

2. Performances: a meal and lunch; “Waiter” Jukka Aaltonen, “Local resident” Anssi Pirttineva. Dinner for three, at 6 pm, lunch at 2 pm on the street, in the corner of two steets, Fleminginkatu and Helsinginkatu. The situation was created and developed impromptu, in cooperation with people in the street, “the street’s a stage”.

3. Venues for discussion and writing, where local people were asked to record their thoughts. The paintings were displayed in the shopfront windows of the Push Firma Beige Gallery.

4. Megaphone discussions in the street, “converationists” Jukka Aaltonen and Anssi Pirttineva. From 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., discussions by actors on non-public issues in public places (with megaphones)

5. An evening party, dancing and an afternoon concert. A concluding party for locals, with heavy music on the cello.

6. The Bag Lady in Kallio – I spent some time on the street, observing life from the point of view of an ordinary person in the street.
